Oh, Instagram foodies, you devourers of whimsical and colorful creatures. Lately you’ve branched out from rainbows and unicorns, and moved onto a new obsession: mermaid toast.
Miami-based food stylist and photographer Adeline Waugh, who posts images of her super-aesthetically pleasing culinary creations under the fitting handle @vibrantandpure, has just sent Instagram into flip turns of excitement. The reason? Her image of a slice of bread spread in swirling strokes with almond milk cream cheese blended with blue and green algae powders and liquids. The aquatically inspired toast is flecked with a few flakes of something golden and sparkly (gold leaf flakes, it seems), making it extra otherworldly and Insta-worthy.
Waugh’s fanciful creation, which she posted to Instagram about a week ago — “not sure what to call this…but I’m thinking mermaid toast, as to continue the tradition of naming toast after mythical creatures,” she wrote at the time — has racked up the likes and the blog mentions. (She’s also the Instagrammer behind unicorn toast.)
In a follow-up post, she expresses gratitude about the favorable response and also shares a few words for the haters who wonder what the point is of so much ado about a slice of toast, albeit a pretty one.
“I am just having fun! I am a food stylist and I like to create beautiful things using food- I’ve never claimed to be starting a trend or a putting out a new recipe that is super practical,” she writes, adding “- it’s 100% impractical, I just like to play around in the kitchen and attempt to create something aesthetically pleasing and unique from time to time.”
What’s more, Waugh says, “I don’t know about you, but with everything going on in the world today, sometimes I just want to look at some colorful food.”
Fair enough. And, hey, who knows? This mermaid toast idea might have legs!
